The Last Boat Out
A Halloween Murder Mystery on Martha's Vineyard
The boats stopped running Friday. By Saturday morning, Philip Peabody was dead. A nor'easter has cut Martha's Vineyard off from the mainland. The Halloween candy is stuck on the dock in Woods Hole, the scallops are up to twenty-six dollars a pound, and Amber Coffin is closing up summer houses the way she has for twenty years: pipes drained, main breaker thrown, a strip of blue painter's tape across it with her initials and the date. So when she finds the old ferry captain at the foot of the stairs in a house she closed herself nineteen days earlier, she knows exactly how she left it. Now the house is warm. The deadbolt is locked. And Philip had no key. The chief is calling it a fall. With the ferries stopped, whoever turned that key may still be on the island, maybe even on the store porch, drinking coffee with everyone else. A fair-play puzzle with every clue on the page before the reveal, a black cat named Quahog, and a clean Halloween cozy with no graphic violence and no bad language. A short read of about 16,800 words, made for one stormy evening.
